Jekyll Island Part 2

We woke to an unexpected foggy day.  We had made our plans based on our expectations for a copy of the prior day's weather.  But that's okay.  We decided to walk to the village for breakfast and give that a whirl.  We headed to the Palmer's Village Cafe.  Boy was the place bustling!  We were greeted by a friendly "Good Morning" and chose a table for two.  The menu was adventurous, for the most part.  You can have your choice of grits or potatoes with your main dish.  Ron and I opted for the potatoes.  We have yet to venture into the grits.  Who knows?  Maybe before we are off the island one of us will give them a try.  Any thoughts on who you think that will be?  Stay tuned.

The fog had lifted sufficiently for us to head out to Jekyll Island in the early afternoon.  The first thing on our agenda was to find Glory Beach.  It's called Glory Beach because it's where they filmed the last battle scene from the movie "Glory".  They built a fortress on the beach to shoot the scene, but that has since been removed.  We met three retired teachers from Massachusetts and got talking.  One of them has been coming to Jekyll Island for 5 years.  She explained that the reason the producers chose the site was as you look out from the beach there is nothing that would suggest modernity in sight.  The stairs in the picture lead to a boardwalk that was added to bring equipment, people, etc to the beach for the filming.  Let me tell you, this beach was not that easy to find.  It was on our map, but there were no road signs for it.  It ended up, that we had to access it thru a parking lot for a soccer field.  Go figure.

After our walk on Glory Beach we wanted to have our lunch and look for the "famous" Driftwood Beach which is actually known as "North Beach".  So we headed in the direction we expected to find our destination, but once again, the access was not marked so we headed to a pier/park on the north end and sat down to enjoy our humble lunch.  What a disappointment!  Ron discovered that our yummy organic multi-grain bread had some mold on it. Trash canned!  Now what?  Lucky for us the little supply shack at the pier sold ice cream.  My pecan praline helped me to recover quickly from my disappointment. Yum!
After getting more detailed directions from a local we were finally able to locate Driftwood Beach.  Pretty dramatic, don't you think?
But definitely not a place to put down your beach chairs and while away the afternoon, at least not for us.  We headed to beautiful North Dune Beach and spent the next hour or so in our beach chairs. We enjoyed the view and watching the various birds do their bird thing.  I especially enjoyed the pelicans and watching them suddenly dive into the water seeking to capture their dinner.
We headed back to the condo right around 5 p.m.  No rush hour traffic to deal with here.  Nice, very nice.
We had a bit of excitement when we saw another enormous ship coming thru the shipping lane.  My goodness, these ships are so enormous and the water must drop off significantly for them to be able to maneuver so close to shore.  Well low and behold, not only was a ship coming in but there was another going out at the same time.  To see these two ships pass within feet of each other was amazing!  We stood on the beach with two of our neighbors (Sally from PA and Judy from VT) and whooped as they made their way.  Ron managed to video the moment.  Enjoy!

Once they passed each other, we watched as the inbound ship headed toward the sunset and caught this beautiful view.

As we headed down the beach the cumulus clouds in the east were dancing with the colors of the sunset.  Pretty special place, don't you agree?  What a treat!

Peace and love to all!
